Great post at EnWorld on the OGL 1.1 and all details known so far (read it here).
If true in interpretation it has far reaching consequences for the hobby as a whole, and WotC/Hasbro is about to kill its own golden goose in my opinion for a quick buck of everyone else's revenue. This makes the pre-4E GSL look like a minor "whoopsy" by comparison.
If this is true, I'll stop supporting all WotC products going forward. So Pathfinder 2E and whatever it takes for Paizo to survive this madness will be where I put my bets!
D&D is not a video game nor a model-seller (Warhammer 40k), the businesses that WOTC is wanting to emulate, but without being a video game or selling physical models. They are also trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube with their new OGL.
ReplyDeleteTabletop RPG's intrinsically demand that users contribute their own imagination and create their own versions of the rules, settings, adventures, and characters. The more restrictive their rules are; the less popular they will be (i.e. 4e). D&D, post 3e OGL, will only be as popular as it is open.
Yep....I don't think the people in charge at Hasbro realize this, though. I feel like maybe there's some discontent at the fact that they, unlike so many other companies with more "control" on their IP, have so much less....and this without consideration for the inherent uniqueness of the market they cater to.
