Blog of Holding has a really cool post on some ideas related to psionics as a catastrophic engdame....a power that reflects the "fraying of reality" and sudden realization of such. Check it out here, but warning: very cool ideas ahead.

As an aside, I wish WotC would realize that Dark Sun, more than ever, is likely an excellent candidate for their next fully-developed world project after Forgotten Realms. Dark Sun would be perfect right now, and interest in unusual, exotic fantasy is really at a peak, I feel.
