First, there was XKCD's lovely insight on this issue. Then there was more discussion, including some great articles outlining Wikipedia hoaxes that turned frivolous internet graffiti into quotable factoids. It all makes for some fascinating reading on what amounts to the finest version of a gestalt shared-universe epistemological nightmare I've seen to date.
